This Weekend in Worship

"Calculating Forgiveness"

Yep……’s all about the math!!  And this doesn’t require very much skill either.  All we have to do is to start counting the times that we have been extended forgiveness and grace by God and compare that to the number of times we have done the same for others it comes down to which number is greater than the other.  The times we have said “….I’ll forgive you, but I won’t forget!” don’t count because we have not truly forgiven if we still remember.  Part of strengthening our relationship with God means that we look for ways to embrace our brothers and sisters and not to stand in judgment of them.  The Gospel according to Matthew reminds us that even 70 times 7 is still not enough.  Spending our time “CALCULATING FORGIVENESS” is such a waste of precious time.

This same type of theme gets picked up again in the letter to the Romans where the question is posed…..”who are you to pass judgment on a brother or sister?”(Common English translation).  We are to welcome all of God’s creation and not try to do the deciding about “who is in” and “who is out”.  And yet, we continue to count………So let’s talk about that a bit!!  Join me on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m..  All are welcome!

We are an open and loving United Methodist community striving to be:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Special Offering to Help Hurricane Victims

Midwest Mission Distribution Center - Their Mission: To compassionately help God's people in need locally, nationally, and around the world and to offer a Center to fulfill the call for service to our neighbors in Christ's name.
Please read the following URGENT NEED from our friends at the Midwest Mission Distribution Center:

The flood waters of receding but we are getting ready to help its survivors. We have purchased 27,000 trash bags and volunteers are rolling them - getting them ready for Cleaning Bucket Kits. Other volunteers are assembling the kits. It has been a busy year for flood relief and we will need all the Cleaning Bucket Kit supplies we can get. Bug spray is in especially short supply.

See this warehouse.

Those racks are usually filled with cleaning buckets. They just finished supplying many buckets to flood victims in northern Illinois and now they must restock to help those affected by hurricanes. In the past we have assembled buckets ourselves and delivered them to MMDC or volunteered at the Center assembling buckets. This time the best thing we can do is send money. They know what they need and they can have those materials sent directly to the Center.
On THIS Sunday, September 17th we will have a special offering to help the MMDC refill their warehouse. Please give as you can to help these people in Texas, Louisiana, Florida and other places get back into their homes.

Vegetables Are Here!!

Fresh corn, tomatoes, peppers and cantaloupe are at church. Proceeds to be disbursed by the Outreach Committee.

Logan Correctional's Out in a Week Boutique

Imagine being released from prison and expected to find a job and re-enter society, but you own nothing, not even ordinary street clothes, and nothing suitable for a job interview. Logan Boutique is changing that.

The Logan Boutique is a new free clothing store at Logan Correctional Center, stocked by donations of "lovingly used, freshly laundered" women's clothing and shoes, where women being released can "shop" for an everyday outfit and an interview outfit, free. Large women's sizes, 3X and 4X, are especially needed right now. Unisex clothing is also welcome.
The boutique also receives baby clothes up to size 2T, because it serves both Logan and the minimum security women's prison at Decatur, where newborns can stay with their mothers.

Suggestion: As you visit garage sales, ask the seller to donate leftovers to you for
Logan Boutique. Most folks will be happy to let you pick them up at the end of the sale.

"Almost Home" men's clothing free store

OK, we know it's not the official Department of Corrections title, but Pastor Linda Walker couldn't resist filling the name gap when the news was announced: Lincoln men's prison is adopting the Logan Boutique-style free store for soon-to-be-released men!

Men's lovingly used and laundered or cleaned clothing - casual, business, work clothing, coats and shoes in all sizes, are needed to launch this great ministry.

We'll tell you the "store" official name as soon as it's announced. Until then, Pastor Linda is calling it "Almost Home!"

It's estimated that only one-fifth of clothing donated to various resale shops in the U.S. is sold where it's donated. The other 80% is usually sold to exporters and dumped in markets of poorer nations where it competes unfairly with local clothing factories, stores, seamstresses, and cotton farmers. When you donate goods to Logan Boutique, you know they'll be used right here in Illinois!

Two large boxes, one for Logan Boutique and one for “Almost Home” will be located under the coat rack, just outside the Narthex. Receipts are available to allow you to track your tax deductible donation. Contact Bob Copeland or Debbie Wordinger with any questions.

Are you scratching your head, saying “WHAT BASKET?”  It’s the one that sits on the floor on the left side of the middle entrance to our Sanctuary.  PLEASE LOOK FOR IT, AND DON’T FORGET TO BRING A DONATION TO CHURCH TO FILL THE BASKET FOR THE WEST SUBURBAN FOOD PANTRY (WOODRIDGE FOOD PANTRY)!
