"The Samaritan Persisted"

Our gospel reading this week, John 4:1-42, presents a familiar story. Perhaps, too familiar. That story, commonly referred to as The Woman at the Well, has collected some…unfortunate addendums. For values of “unfortunate”, that is, that include awful, terrible, misogynistic, pernicious, and bearing false witness against a neighbor. Reading this story again, we can wonder:

• Why has this story been susceptible to such ill treatment?
• How might we begin to correct its ill-gotten bad reputation?
• What can this boundary-crossing story tell us about what Jesus valued — and thus, by extension, what God values?
• Which boundaries do we need to courageously cross in our lives?

This Sunday, February 11th, Pastor Dave will consider these questions and more in his sermon, “The Samaritan Persisted.”

Worship gatherings happen at 9:00am and 10:30am Sunday mornings. All are welcome!

Lenten Bible Study

Our Lenten bible study will be "Embracing the Uncertain" by Magrey R. DeVega.  Just turning on the news lets us know we are living in uncertain times. Economic instabilities, eruptions of violence, and natural catastrophes can alter the lives and landscapes of entire communities. Our individual lives are often just as unsteady: relationships can break, plans can falter, and confidence can fail.

DeVega invites readers to engage and wrestle with life’s uncertainties, not ignore them. The first six chapters focus on six post-Transfiguration, pre-Passion stories in the Gospels. Each of these stories are signposts in the gospel narrative, pointing down at a world filled with uncertainty, but pointing us forward to a cross that can show us how to follow Jesus with courage, hope, and obedience.

Join us on Tuesday mornings (10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) starting on February 20th or Wednesday evenings (6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) starting on February 21st.  Books cost $10.  The sign up sheet is in the narthex.

Our Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that our Prison Clothing Ministry is GROWING AND EXPANDING.  We are now able to partner with other participating area churches in the Suits for Success Program.  This non-profit, volunteer organization which was founded by Bill Denwood of Community Methodist Church in Naperville provides, at no charge, gently used clothes to parolees throughout the State of Illinois that are suitable for interviews with prospective employers.   Prior to this time, WUMC’s donations served only the Logan Correctional Facility in Lincoln, Illinois.

The Suits for Success Program also partners with area dry-cleaners which serve as drop-off points and clean and press the clothes for free.  The participating dry cleaner closest to us is Signature Cleaners, Steve Hirmer, Owner, on Werhli in Naperville.  You may drop off your donations directly with Steve or bring them to WUMC and place in the boxes in the hallway which leads from the Narthex to Fellowship Hall.  THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR DONATIONS!!!!
