"A New Way of Seeing"

This Sunday marks the second Sunday of Advent.  We anticipate the coming again of the Christ-child in our lives.  We have decorated our sanctuary and will light the second candle on the Advent wreath this week as we look forward to that special night.  We are the ones who are SENT into the world to be the living presence of Christ, taking that light to the dark places of our world.

 Sometimes we look past people.  We don’t see who they really are or what is really going on in their lives.  We are cordial but not “inviting”.  Think about the person who bags your groceries or the person at the dry cleaners or the waitperson in the restaurant.  And certainly the homeless person asking for food or spare change.  All of these people we tend to not really see.  Yet over and over again Jesus reaches out to them and reminds us to do the same.  We need to adopt a NEW WAY OF SEEING.  Looking at others and noticing them is the greatest compliment we can give and it’s the response that Jesus gives to each of us.  Let’s discover some ways to adopt this NEW WAY OF SEEING.  Join us at 9 or 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.  ALL are welcome.

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

December PADS: Help with dinner service needed.

 Our next commitment for PADS is December 19th and 20th. As in the past we will be providing food and volunteers to feed and house the homeless on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning at First United Methodist on Maple in Downers Grove.  Please check the sign up sheet in the Narthex and let me know if you won’t be able to make your usual commitment. We still need help with dinner service and morning clean up. We could also use overnight backup monitors. These times are between 10:00-2:00 and 2:00-5:30 on Wednesday morning.  If you have any questions, call Debbie Wordinger at 331 645-7779.

Christmas Food Boxes and Hams for Trinity UMC

Sign-up in the Narthex to donate food boxes and turkeys for families at our sister church, Trinity United Methodist in Joliet.  Your donation provides a holiday meal for a family who would otherwise do without.  Pick up a list of items to include in each food box at the Outreach table in the Narthex.  Hams and food boxes are due back in the church kitchen by noon on Friday, December 17.

The Mitten Tree is Back!

Bring in child size mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to decorate our tree. All donations will go to Woodridge School District 68 for the needs of local students. We will make a delivery in early December and then again after Christmas break.

Christmas Gifts for the West Suburban Community Pantry

Pantry clients that live in Woodridge qualify for a program that allow their children to get Christmas gifts from local congregations.  Due to limited supplies many of the children are left out of this program.  We are collecting new unwrapped toys for boys and girls from 2 to 12 years old to help meet this need until Sunday, December 3rd. Please place them in the designated box in the Narthex.

Trustees Wish List Projects

There are several projects that the Trustees would like to complete but are lacking the funds. Contribute to the Wish List and as money becomes available, the Trustees will start a project. For those that have already given, Thank You!

Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible purchases to Woodridge United Methodist Church whenever you shop on AmazonSmile.

Our Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that our Prison Clothing Ministry is GROWING AND EXPANDING.  We are now able to partner with other participating area churches in the Suits for Success Program.  This non-profit, volunteer organization which was founded by Bill Denwood of Community Methodist Church in Naperville provides, at no charge, gently used clothes to parolees throughout the State of Illinois that are suitable for interviews with prospective employers.   Prior to this time, WUMC’s donations served only the Logan Correctional Facility in Lincoln, Illinois.

The Suits for Success Program also partners with area dry-cleaners which serve as drop-off points and clean and press the clothes for free.  The participating dry cleaner closest to us is Signature Cleaners, Steve Hirmer, Owner, on Werhli in Naperville.  You may drop off your donations directly with Steve or bring them to WUMC and place in the boxes in the hallway which leads from the Narthex to Fellowship Hall.  THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR DONATIONS!!!!

 Are you scratching your head, saying “WHAT BASKET?”  It’s the one that sits on the floor on the left side of the middle entrance to our Sanctuary.  PLEASE LOOK FOR IT, AND DON’T FORGET TO BRING A DONATION TO CHURCH TO FILL THE BASKET FOR THE WEST SUBURBAN FOOD PANTRY (WOODRIDGE FOOD PANTRY)!

Woodridge United Methodist Church (WUMC), our Church, partners with the West Suburban Food Pantry in providing food for the economically disadvantaged of our community.
