"Do Not Be Afraid"

Both of our scripture readings for this week (Isaiah 41:9-10 and Matthew 1:18-25) include the refrain, “Do not be afraid.” In both instances, that phrase is presented as a message from God to people who, frankly, are in some fairly frightful situations.

Today, even we who live in relative comfort and security sometimes (often?) find ourselves full of fear. Why is that? Of what are we afraid? Are we honest with ourselves about those fears?

Did you notice that both scripture readings also include the statement “God is with us”? Why was that so important to our biblical authors? How might that proclamation be an antidote to our fears today?

Pastor Dave considers those questions and more in his sermon, “Do Not Be Afraid”, this Sunday, December 17th as our Advent series, “Sent”, continues.

Worship gatherings are Sunday mornings at 9:00 and 10:30. All are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

 Our next commitment for PADS is December 19th and 20th. As in the past we will be providing food and volunteers to feed and house the homeless on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning at First United Methodist on Maple in Downers Grove.  Please check the sign up sheet in the Narthex and let me know if you won’t be able to make your usual commitment. We still need help with dinner service and morning clean up. We could also use overnight backup monitors. These times are between 10:00-2:00 and 2:00-5:30 on Wednesday morning.  If you have any questions, call Debbie Wordinger at 331 645-7779.

Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON)
Dear Woodridge United Methodist Church,
Your gift has already made an impact…our lawyer and paralegal have been working almost non-stop to provide free legal counsel to immigrants.  Our Country’s immigration system is not simple and now it is an ever changing environment. Your generosity helps us focus on providing the excellent, free legal counsel to vulnerable immigrants n the communities we serve.

Thanks you for your generous gift of $1123 to Northern Illinois JFON on November 7, 2017.

As the Chair of Development, I would like to personally than you for making our work possible.  Your kindness supported our attorney in meeting with immigrants eager to be in the United States with the appropriate documents.
Our current and future success of providing excellent and free legal advice to immigrants I made possible by the continued generosity of our supporters.
With deep gratitude,
Melissa Earley

Our Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that our Prison Clothing Ministry is GROWING AND EXPANDING.  We are now able to partner with other participating area churches in the Suits for Success Program.  This non-profit, volunteer organization which was founded by Bill Denwood of Community Methodist Church in Naperville provides, at no charge, gently used clothes to parolees throughout the State of Illinois that are suitable for interviews with prospective employers.   Prior to this time, WUMC’s donations served only the Logan Correctional Facility in Lincoln, Illinois.

The Suits for Success Program also partners with area dry-cleaners which serve as drop-off points and clean and press the clothes for free.  The participating dry cleaner closest to us is Signature Cleaners, Steve Hirmer, Owner, on Werhli in Naperville.  You may drop off your donations directly with Steve or bring them to WUMC and place in the boxes in the hallway which leads from the Narthex to Fellowship Hall.  THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR DONATIONS!!!!

 Are you scratching your head, saying “WHAT BASKET?”  It’s the one that sits on the floor on the left side of the middle entrance to our Sanctuary.  PLEASE LOOK FOR IT, AND DON’T FORGET TO BRING A DONATION TO CHURCH TO FILL THE BASKET FOR THE WEST SUBURBAN FOOD PANTRY (WOODRIDGE FOOD PANTRY)!

Woodridge United Methodist Church (WUMC), our Church, partners with the West Suburban Food Pantry in providing food for the economically disadvantaged of our community.
