"A Fishy Gospel Tale"

Oh wow! Does the Lectionary ever give us a treat this week! Not just one, but two fish stories. Really, who doesn’t love a good fish story?

We get the Gospel of Mark’s version of Jesus calling some fishermen to be disciples and we get the fascinating, brilliant, funny, short story of Jonah.

(Ok, so the Lectionary only gives us Chapter 3 of Jonah, but it really is a short story - why not read from the beginning? Besides, what is the first thing that comes to mind with the story of Jonah? The whale, of course.)

Why do Jonah and the other characters in the story act as they do?
What might we learn from Jonah’s do-over and the faithfulness of (gulp!) our enemies?
How might the story of Jonah help us to better understand Jesus and Mark’s Gospel?
Do we all have to become ichthyologists in order to be faithful disciples?

Pastor Dave will wrestle with these questions and more in his sermon, “A Fishy Gospel Tale.”

So join us in worship this Sunday, January 21st at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. All are welcome!

Thank you so much for your support!

Thank You

Just a word of thanks and appreciation for your giving to our Christmas offering in December 2017. The total amount given was $8,235.00. Because we have this opportunity to be in ministry with others, a portion of what we receive (10%) always goes to a special designated mission project. Thus, we were able to give $823.50 to Family Shelter Services. This organization addresses the needs of men, women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Thank you for your generosity.

Thank You from "Suits for Success"

"Wow, is your congregation mission oriented. Woodridge United Methodist Church has given well over 600 pieces of clothing to the men’s and women’s prisons DURING 2017. It is amazing! Not even Grace Naperville, Community UMC Naperville which has given 560 pieces nor Gary UMC in Wheaton have given as much. Missions have a real meaning in your church and seem to be uppermost in everyone’s thinking". Bill Denwood, Volunteer Coordinator, Suits for Success-provides gently used clothes to parolees throughout the state of Illinois that are suitable for interviews with prospective employers. Our Church’s donations are collected in the boxes in the hallway which leads from the Narthex to Fellowship Hall.

Bible Study

Our next bible study  is HALF TRUTHS by Adam Hamilton and is offered on Wednesday evenings (6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) and Tuesday mornings (10:30 a.m. to noon). The plan for Wednesday remains to join the youth for dinner at about 6:30 p.m. and then as they go off to their activities, we will go to our class. We will conclude at 8:30 p.m., about the same time as the youth finish.  Classes have already started, but please join us!!

True or false:
1. Everything happens for a reason.
2. God helps those who help themselves.
3. God won’t give you more than you can handle.
4. God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
5. Love the sinner, hate the sin.
All true? Not so fast. We’ve heard these phrases all of our lives, but in Adam Hamilton’s new book, Half Truths, you’ll learn that although they capture some element of truth, when compared to the wisdom found in Scripture, they’re really just popular sayings.

If you are attending for the first time, please arrive a few minutes early to sign a health waiver and meet the instructor. Any questions, please contact Carrie Santucci at 630-532-7741 or

2018 Laity Convocation

The date for this year’s Laity Convocation is Saturday, February 17th from 9:00 am to 12:45 pm.  The convocation will be held at the Sycamore UMC (160 Johnson Ave., Sycamore Il.).  We are thrilled that the Reverend Doctor Junius Dotson, General Secretary of Discipleship Ministries, will be our keynote speaker and a leader of one of the five breakout sessions.  Dr. Dotson is a dynamic leader and speaker and has introduced a new evangelism tool to
the United Methodist church called “See All The People.”  We also have five breakout sessions, all designed to help local churches to better understand how to reach out to neighbors and bring the way of Jesus to them.  Breakout session will be lead by laity and pastors who have put into action what they will talk about.  All church members are welcome to attend!

Trustees Wish List Projects

There are several projects that the Trustees would like to complete but are lacking the funds. Contribute to the Wish List and as money becomes available, the Trustees will start a project. For those that have already given, Thank You!

Our Outreach Committee is pleased to announce that our Prison Clothing Ministry is GROWING AND EXPANDING.  We are now able to partner with other participating area churches in the Suits for Success Program.  This non-profit, volunteer organization which was founded by Bill Denwood of Community Methodist Church in Naperville provides, at no charge, gently used clothes to parolees throughout the State of Illinois that are suitable for interviews with prospective employers.   Prior to this time, WUMC’s donations served only the Logan Correctional Facility in Lincoln, Illinois.

The Suits for Success Program also partners with area dry-cleaners which serve as drop-off points and clean and press the clothes for free.  The participating dry cleaner closest to us is Signature Cleaners, Steve Hirmer, Owner, on Werhli in Naperville.  You may drop off your donations directly with Steve or bring them to WUMC and place in the boxes in the hallway which leads from the Narthex to Fellowship Hall.  THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR DONATIONS!!!!

Celebrate "Souper" Bowl Sunday

Good News! Good Results! During 2017, Woodridge United Methodist Church (WUMC) gave 500 pounds of food and $1,430 in monetary donations to the West Suburban Community Pantry (Woodridge Food Pantry). This represents a 30 percent increase compared to our 2016 donations. Since 2015, our donations are up over 63 percent. The Food Pantry is celebrating the "Souper Bowl" by collecting hearty soups. Please fill the basket at the entrance to our sanctuary with cans of soup. Your donations help feed the less fortunate in our community!
