ABOUT PUBLIC ACTION TO DELIVER SHELTER (PADS)
Each night that we host PADS at First United Methodist in Downers Grove we have many wonderful volunteers, others who donate food, and many people who do both. However we have a few volunteer jobs that we always have trouble filling. Please look into your hearts and see if you can help with one of these crucial jobs. If you can not make a commitment for every one of our PADS dates but would be willing to be on a call list, please call the church office 630-968-6050.
Our major need is for another person to work as an overnight monitor from 2:00 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Other than staying awake, your job consists of occasionally taking care of requests from PADS guests for water, etc. and keeping order within the site. This last is not usually required, but needs to be considered as you consider if this is a job for you. You can speak to others who have done this job: Jorie Manderfield, Vann Harris, Walt Read, or Pastor Dave.
We also need someone to help with breakfast preparation, service and clean-up. This requires getting to the site at 5:00 a.m., preparing coffee, toast, scrambled eggs, sausage and pre-prepared hash browns, serving the guests and putting the kitchen back to rights. We are usually done by 8:00. Others who have done this job are Janice Nitchals, Pat Del Rosso, Alice Marianyi, and Lynn Balamut.
Other jobs we could you some additional names to call on as necessary are volunteers for the morning clean-up crew. This means getting to the site by 6:00 a.m., picking up and wiping down all the bed pads, collecting the dirty laundry into baskets, and cleaning and breaking down the chairs and tables.
